Never forget that the Buddha taught the Cessation of suffering!

Practice to achieve this and to then teach others.

The Buddhist American Forest Tradition offers a special place for women who seriously wish to pursue a guided Meditation practice based on early Buddhist teachings. This is a monastic life practiced within the United States in English.  H.H. Ven. Bhante Vimalaramsi is the abbot for the center. It is his vision that such a tradition should develop in line with the original teachings of the Buddha and that a place in America hsould be developed where English is the primary language used to teach the highest levels of meditation to BOTH men ane women equally.  He acknowledges the fact that men and women can equallybe  trained in the Dhamma.

A spiritual center and monastery has been created here which offers full training and ordination programsfor those who are truly serious about monastic life. The American nuns wear an old Burmese forest tradition color that is purple. The exact color has not yet been determined as purples are very hard to match! but it's coming along.

Purple Nuns -  Group Profile

This group began in 2003. The training leads us to practice Right Striving/Right Effort, all the time. Our energy gradually shifts towards Observing, Practicing, Preserving and Teaching the original Buddha Dhamma fulltime. Trained in the proper way, a student naturally moves in the direction of compassionate service  becoming a conduit for the buddha's words, drills and training. When following the original instructions found in the Pali suttas there is no question that this training still leads to a more happy and compassionate life. As the true nature of everything unfolds for us to see clearly, a natural desire to help others is born in us.

The center supports teaching others how to open the doorway to peaceful coexistence through learning this practice too. It supports programs to assist disabled persons to be able to come in to the center for solitary retreat time and meditation training. A Universal Peace Cabin has been constructed and we hope to host Veterans who wish to come into solitude for periods of time beginning in October 2009.

The nuns ordination program is dedicated to producing FULLY TRAINED nuns who have seen, understand, and will be able to clearly explain the Buddha Dhamma in simple English to others. Women are taught equally as  male counterparts and, slowly, they gain respect of elder Sangha members through their clear understanding of the Dhamma. buddhism was not about Gender. it was about Dhamma and the ability of monastics to leve Gender behind them and teachh others the Dhamma.  the Dhamma makes all things possible.

The Vinaya is followed as closely as possible and students use the commentaries for reference as well within the study cirriculum. The practice seeks to help people reclaim their childlike curiosity, lightness,in life, contented happiness, and balance in life. As people begin to smile again, they naturally find a more useful productive peaceful co-existence in their daily life in monastic or mainstream society.

Buddhist Study

The Tradition supports the continuation of this Dispensation of the Buddha Dhamma through faithfully giving ear to (listening to), memorizing and repeating to others the Dhamma very clearly and precisely in English. The practice is basically easy to understand, leading people to immediate relief, and creates unshakable confidence in the Buddha's Teachings. The original texts encourage Buddhist Meditation, continual questioning of the teacher, and testing of all that is taught through personal experience where one attains knowledge and vision. Nothing is blindly accepted here! Each person comes to see for themselves the Dhamma as it unfolds and their perspective shifts over into right view or seeing the Impersonal nature of everything.

It is with great respect that we also offer to teach any other monastics Dhamma ENGLISH to assist them in their ownTradition's  Dhamma work whiel teaching American people. Offering equality in training, founded on the basis of compassion, respect, and sincere effort was the original intention of the Buddha and this  is continued here today. In this way we attempt to move forward towards a more peaceful world.

Livelihood

Our mission is to see clearly how things actually work. We begin by practicing smiling which lightens up our minds and by reducing tension and tightness in mind and body. This helps us get to the remarkable potential of clear, pure mind.  This is what arose for the Buddha within the original Buddhist Meditation Practice.  Renunciation means releasing ourselves from the householders life, responsibilities and worries, leaving mainstream society and the stress of it's responsibilities behind. This gives us more dedicated time to train  properly. We commit ourselves to exist only on  Dana/donations from lay people and monastic communities throughout the world. We support and teach peaceful co-existence through uncovering and understanding for ourselves the true nature of suffering, how to detect it's root cause in CRAVING, the cessation of this suffering and how it manifests, and,  the path to that cessation which the Buddha so precisely taught.

Refreshing Adventure

This project truly is a new approach to Buddhism and most people agree it's a refreshingnew angle adventure here in America. This group holds in great respect the entire World Buddhist Sangha and all teachers of the Buddha Dhamma. We look forward to the Sangha's support and enthusiasm as we all attempt to train equally, thus offering further support for this Dhamma in this 21st century.

To date the remark heard most often from students who come to study with our American Abbot is "Oh WOW!" or

"At last, Buddhism has finally come home 'clearly' to the West! It's not confusing anymore. It is like one beautiful tapestry interwoven together which actually still works in daily life!"

"

This is followed by sincere smiles and much happy energy for this wonderful discovery of how to live more in the present moment with joy and once again smile in life.

One student commented, "It's true! One CAN actually live in a smile and it changes everything! It is great fun to watch people figure this out. Come and see!"  C.F./Australia

"For me coming to find Dhamma Sukha and the nuns project was like finally seeing Buddhism come home in the West! Wonderful!" S./ England
